What Grows on Granite Memorials

Granite Memorials can attract natural growths like lichen, a slow-growing, crusty, leafy layer of fungi species. Lichen thrives on granite's porous surface, overtime, its roots penetrate the stone, making it harder to remove and potentially damaging to the stones inscriptions and images.

Why is it Crucial to Remove Lichen Properly

Since granite is porous, it is essential to remove not only the visible lichen but also the roots that have embedded themselves into the surface. If the roots are not fully eradicated, the lichen will simply return, and it will be even more difficult to remove in the future. This is why professional cleaning is crucial, ensuring the stone has been reverted to its original state.

How We Remove Lichen from Granite Memorials

Lichen should be cleaned as soon as possible, as the longer it's left untreated, the harder it becomes to remove. We start by wetting the granite memorial with a mixture of water and commercial soap, then gently scrub the area with a nylon (fingernail) brush. If this doesnt fully remove the lichen, a specialized lichen cleaner may be needed. For deeply engrained lichen, we offer a professional chemical washing service. this commercial-grade solution not only removes visible growth but also kills the organisms and eliminates the roots from within the porous granite. Our chemical wash restores the memorial to its origninal condition, ensuring it stays beautiful and legible for years to come.
